Next Year, my mom wants to get a new car for her 40th, as a gift.

She really fell in love with the Ford Edge, and it seems very likely that we might buy it sooner than we thought

thoughts on it? Specifically the current facelifted one, Sport trim (fully loaded basically).

Kinja'd!!!

This is our first Ford EVER in our family, if she buys it. Like my moms whole family has never owned one, I don't even think cousins and so on have either.

edit: I'm going to be driving this alot. She says I won't touch her new car, but I know for a fact I will drive it almost as much as she does.

very late post... I might make a general crossover one tomarrow for replies lol

the one pictured looks sooo good. I say yes to this or its Swedish cousin, the XC60.

thats what i said, she wanted a Volvo s60 real bad, but then shes like "I want an SUV, i don't want another compact, I want an suv", and then im like "hey, volvo makes a suv s60 sort-of"

We haven't been to volvo yet, im trying to convince her because I want to drive a volvo

I like it in Sport trim.

It's always seemed a bit pudgy to me. The massive grille might be causing me to think that though.

it does look chunky, I think the Explorer looks much better, its one of my fav looking SUVs.

The sport trim is really nice with the black grille though, She wants it in blue or grey with the black grille and black rims.

Yup, XC60 is an suv S60. WithDrive-E, best mpg and power in its class. A fullt loaded Edge is awesome and around the same price as XC60. Tough choice.

sport with the big wheels looks great. Look at the BMW X3 if she wants a small SUV that's luxurious and sporty. Not too expensive either, especially if you go CPO. I know she might say new only, but take her to test drive one.

she liked the X1, so we might be heading to BMW for the x1 and x3. I want her to get an x3 since I will be driving it alot.

She wants last gen because it will be cheaper, but I do admit, the new one is soooo awesome looking

the X1 is also really nice. Make sure you get her an M-sport model. The steering wheel and the seats are entirely worth it in any BMW. Also, get xenons. Every BMW owner loves angel eyes, every owner that ended up getting halogens regrets it. It's an expensive retrofit so it's best to just get it out the box.

(X3 is a stock M-sport, X1 is modified and lowered on Coilovers)

if you're buying new, and it sounds like you are, it's not going to be a huge cost difference.

Remember the Edge is built on the previous Fusion platform, which is a GREAT platform and it lives under my Mercury Milan (daily driver), I just can't do the styling, especially when compared to the new one.

If you're going used, look up the Lincoln MKX, a used one might balance out in cost to a new Edge.

I'm going to push for any sport model for any SUV she gets. I love that X1, the colour and wheels and height... i love it.

I'll be driving it alot so I'm not sure what preforms better., but I know the X1 is cheaper, so its the more realistic one.

Valencia orange :) great M-sport Color for the X1. Both the X1 and X3 are incredibly nimble for what they are. A small SUV has no business handling like how the X3 does haha. The X1 is much more car like. Pair it with lowering springs/coilovers and it pretty much becomes a wagon.

Talk her into a 35i model with the twin turbo inline 6. Fantastic engine. I have the NA version of it. So smooooth. The tuning for the turbo engine is also unreal. You'll put down 400hp EASY.

My dad has a 2011 Edge. It's really nice inside, and it drives like a big car.

Looking at vehicles at that price range Id get the V60 myself. It doesn't have the soccer mom look the SUVs have, plus I bet it's more frugal yet faster when equipped with the same engine.

Meh. From my rental experiences, MyTouch is f****** annoying. I don't think I've ever been so frustrated with an audio interface in my life. They luckily fixed the brakes from the previous generation, which had like the worst stopping distances of all cars available.

Like the other poster, I would look at the XC60. It's built better, looks nicer, more comfortable, and has an insane MPG.

i was kinda worried about that lol, since we are going from a honda civic, which will probably be mine if she doesn't trade it in

I mean, what do you expect?

It's a reasonably large crossover. It drives fine, but it's basically just a car, and it's heavy. My dad was the V6 non-ecoboost FWD, it's just a big heavy car. It's comfortable, but far from exciting.

thats what I thought honestly, I was wondering if the ecoboost would make it more exciting. "exciting" and "crossover suv" are words you see seldom used together

I haven't driven the ecoboost, but I'm going to say no.

I'm sure it's not bad in a straightline, but it's still a big lumbering crossover. Save some money and get whatever engine is most fuel efficient.

It does drive very well. The chassis puts the power down very well. Look at the Polestar, it only has 350hp but can hit 60mph in 4.5 sec. That is all part of an efficient chassis. The base Drive-E T-5 in the V60 drives well also because full power is in your normal driving rev range. But if it doesn't quite tickle your fancy, you can always add Polestar tune to it for that extra boost of power or get the T-6 super/turbo.

Ok, that makes sense it would be a big price jump then to get into the Lincoln.

I'm not a huge fan of the styling like I said, but it's a great platform that will treat her really well.

We hope we can get something to atleast live up the standards our civic set (pretty much nothing wrong with the car until speaker problems recently)

how many miles did you run the civic for?

I know the Fusion/Milan will go to 200k miles if properly maintained without much hassle.

And the Edge is on the same platform (CD3 platform: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_CD3_… )

I would imagine it would treat her pretty well. Like I said, regular maintenance is the key.

I've kept up on maintenance on my Milan which is an 07 V6 (3.0L) and I've taken it from from 45,000 to 86,500 now without anything but maintenance. All I can do now is hope and pray it stays that way, but I doubt I'll have any trouble.

My dad loves his Ford Edge, but he also hates GM, Mazda, Subaru, Toyota, VW, Volvo, Chrysler, BMW, and Mercedes, so he didn't shop around very much (CRV, Escape, and Edge were his options). I would encourage you to shop around, but it's really a good crossover! The interior is still a bit too plasticy for me, personally. Ask me if you have any questions!
